FIRST LEGO League Explore (FLL Explore)

(Kindergarten-3rd grades)
Directed by:
Mr. Jacob Eapen (HCS Parent)
It’s never too early to discover STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering & Math). FIRST LEGO League Explore is designed to introduce STEM concepts to kids ages 6 to 10 while exciting them through use of LEGO!

Guided by coaches, teams of up to 6 members, grades K-4, explore a real-world scientific problem such as food safety, recycling, or energy. Then they create a Show Me poster that illustrates their journey of discovery and introduces their team. They also construct a motorized model of what they learned using LEGO elements. In the process, teams learn about teamwork, the wonders of science and technology, and the FIRST Core Values, which include respect, sharing, and critical thinking. At the close of each season, teams come together in a fun 'fair' like atmosphere to share their Show Me poster and LEGO model, and to celebrate and have fun.

At HCS we have all the equipment to run several FLL Explore teams, and we've had over a dozen teams in the past. In 2016 we didn't have any teams. Why?  Because we didn't have any parents to be the coaches. If you are interested in FLL Explore for your student, consider becoming a coach. It's very easy to do and a short time commitment of one after-school time per week (about 2 hours per session for 8-10 weeks.)  You would work with 3-6 students in Kindergarten to 3rd grade to explore the year's science topic and to help them create a Lego model based on the year's theme.

Patriot Robotics
Our FLL Explore program is a part of our overall HCS robotics program called Patriot Robotics. Our high school team, The Supposable Thumbs, has historically been very involved in delivering FLL Explore Expos in Wisconsin, having hosted an expo at HCS or at other schools for the past six years.  Their expo model has become a template for groups across the country to use to deliver a high quality and super fun experience for the FLL Explore students that attend.
